How to Style cropped denim

DSC_1915.JPG

The Cropped flare denim is a huge trend for Spring!  It’s a super cute look, but it can be a little tricky because of the length.   I have heard quite a few women say they don’t know how to wear them.  Here are a few guidelines to help you master the trend of the cropped flare.

  1. They should hit right above the ankle. It’s not a capri pant like back in the day. It is just a slight crop.
  2. Heels, especially a blocked one look great with flared, crops.  I also love a wedge.  If you are tall, you can get away with a flat, but average and short people need some height otherwise this length can make you appear shorter.
  3. Flared crops are somewhat of a preppy look. I love a tucked in top with them. A button up or any top with structure will really pull off the look.
  4. Avoid long tops as that can throw off the proportions with the cropped pant. Jackets and tops that come to the hip bone or a little shorter work best.
  5. Wear a skinny belt with a tucked in top for a pulled together look!

As with all denim, I found this style at all different price points.  I am wearing Citizens of humanity crop flare jean, but I found them as inexpensive as 24.99 at JcPenny A.N.A Cropped Flare Jean.  I recommend grabbing a pair for Spring and then you can continue to wear them in the fall with booties.  I hope this answers any questions you might have about how to wear this trend.  🙂

I would love to hear from you! Feel free to leave any questions or comments.

“Hopping into Easter”

Easter

Easter is just around the corner!! I love Easter for so many reasons. The main one being the spiritual significance and the hope that we have in the Resurrection.  Also, it means Spring is officially here (and I know the old fashion rules no longer apply) but it feels right to officially switch over to your Spring wardrobe.  I actually did this a while back because I was so over winter 🙂  My kiddos absolutely love to dye and hunt Easter eggs. So, it’s really just a great day all around for our family!

When I saw this amazing pink sheath dress from one of my ALL TIME favorite boutiques, Tulips, I just knew I had to have it for Easter!  I LOVE PINK!!! This is my favorite shade of pink.  I call it “Barbie pink”.  It’s one of the few pinks that works with my hair and skin tone.   This dress sold out SUPER fast at Tulips, but luckily I found it online, Pink Britney Pocketed dress.    This dress runs on the smaller side.  I ordered my normal size and am literally going to have to skip breakfast Easter morning to get it zipped lol.   My turquoise earrings are also from Tulips and I absolutely love the pop of turquoise against the pink.  You can follow them on Instagram @tulipsinlittlerock and they will ship to your door!

Easter is less than two weeks away.  So if you haven’t purchased your dress, you better get with it! Most websites can still get it to you on time and there are almost always options to upgrade your shipping for a little bit more.  Here are some tips to keep in mind as you shop for that perfect dress!

  1. Go for some color! It’s spring now so don’t be afraid to go for some bold Spring colors and patterns.
  2. Most everyone will be wearing their Easter dress to church, so keep that in mind.  Nothing too short, tight, and no cleavage!!!  A couple of inches above the knee is a good rule of thumb.
  3. A Nude color pump or strappy heel ALWAYS works.  No matter the color, style of the dress, you just can’t go wrong. These Jessica Simpson pumps are my go to shoes.
  4. Use your accessories to give a pop of color.  Statement jewelry is everywhere and can really add interest.  Choose a contrasting (yet complimentary color) like I did with the turquoise.  Which by the way, turquoise looks good with everything.  I practically treat it as a neutral 🙂Easter 2I absolutely LOVE this adorable Fairy Garden Frenchie Dress by Matilda Jane Clothing. It is the perfect Easter dress.  I mean a pink tutu?? You just can’t beat that!  All orders placed by April 5th will arrive in time for Easter, April 7th if you select Ground shipping.  Matilda Jane has several great options for Easter and the quality is amazing!  Below are some more of my favorites for the little princess in your life!  You can shop them all Hereeaster collageI hope you have a wonderful Easter holiday with your family celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord!   Please leave comments or questions if you have them! What are your Easter family traditions?  Thanks so much for reading and please enter your email address and follow along if you haven’t already!

“Mad about Maxi dresses”

DSC_1729.JPG

DSC_1727

I absolutely LOVE dresses. Once it gets warm (and STAYS warm) you will see me in a dress everyday! Shorts aren’t really my thing, so dresses are my Spring/Summer staples.  I mean it’s so easy. Throw it on and you are fully dressed in 2 seconds and totally pulled together. And they are super comfortable and cool when it’s hot.  I especially love maxi dresses because they are forgiving. If I haven’t had time to shave my legs or put on a tan, no one knows!  🙂

I’m loving the bohemian style maxi dresses.  The “If you only knew” maxi dress from FREE PEOPLE is absolutely amazing as is all of their clothing.  I adore this brand because of the attention to detail and the fabulous prints and colors they use.  It is pricey, but it is high quality and will last you for years!  I always invest in a few of their pieces each season and I get so much good out of them and I’m able to style them multiple ways.  I will also wear this dress in the fall with booties. Many of their pieces work year round because of the great color palette they use!  In case you can’t tell, FREE PEOPLE is one of my absolute favorite clothing lines EVER!

Another perk to maxi dresses is the versatility.  Throw them on with flip flops to be casual or put on some wedges and jewelry and you have an evening/date night outfit.  And of course they are perfect for weddings, church. etc.  I really can’t think of any setting where a maxi dress WON’T work. So it’s a win situation all the way around! I even wear my casual lightweight ones as  a swimsuit cover up. So you get the idea, you get major versatility here!

Here are some more of my favorite maxi dresses with that airy, bohemian vibe.  These are all below $100!

Add at LEAST one maxi dress to your Spring/Summer wardrobe!  It’s a staple you can wear again and again!  What are your summer go to pieces?   I would love to hear from you!! 🙂

“Long wear Lipstick Review”

DSC_1742

DSC_1741

DSC_1746

I am such a lipstick girl!! I started wearing a pale pink when I was in sixth grade and I literally have had it on EVERY DAY SINCE!  I never have naked lips! So I thought I would explore the world of long wear lipstick and see which ones really last  AND if they stay on all day, do they actually look decent?  I tried several of them and these are my personal thoughts and experiences.

Smashbox always on matte liquid lipstick– I purchased this in a GORGEOUS red color.  It has a unique shaped applicator which makes application super easy.  It goes on very smoothly and dries to a nice, matte finish.  This stayed put on me for 8-10 hours and only started to wear off on my inner lip area.  I didn’t experience any flaking or cracking. And it was easy to remove.  Overall, I really like this product!

Lipsense Long lasting liquid lip color-  I like that this lip color is highly pigmented.  I wear it often for pictures because it really does stay put!  It does tingle or slightly burn when you apply it, which surprised me a little bit the first time. I put it on early in the morning and applied the gloss a few times throughout the day so my lips didn’t feel dry.  The color was still there in the evening and actually still looked pretty good. It only started to wear off in the middle of my lips  a little bit.  In order to remove it, you need to purchase their remover otherwise it is super hard to get off.  And interestingly enough,  the “Caramel Apple” color I tried stay on longer and looked better longer than a red color I tried in the exact same product.  With the red color, I experienced more cracking and flaking.  Also, this lipstick will not transfer onto your cup or anyone you kiss 🙂  If you are interested in trying this long wear lipstick then you must purchase through a lipsense distributor.

Limelight by Alcone Enduring Lip color– I bought this in the most gorgeous pink color ever, “Wedding Cake”!  And unlike most long wear lipsticks, it actually feels creamy going on. And it goes on smoothly.  This stayed put for around 6-8 hours.  Of all of the ones I tried, this product felt the least drying which I love! My lips seem to get so dry this time of year.  And it was very easy to remove at the end of the day.  I just used a baby wipe and it came right off. I really like the feel of this product.  You get the long wear without the dryness.

Lip Lingerie– This is only $6.99 so for the price this is pretty good!  It does feel a little “tacky” going on in my opinion.  It stayed put through eating/drinking, but it is a little too dry for me.  I might try gloss over it next time!  But overall, not too bad for such a low price.

Maybelline Super Stay– I like how the “stain” part goes on, but wasn’t a fan of the chap stick like coat that you are supposed to put over it.  My lips felt super dry after a few hours and I experienced some cracking due to the dryness.  But the color really does last and it’s only 8.99!

What is your “go-to” lipstick?  I would love to hear your favorites!! Please leave comments and questions.  I hope this info is helpful if you are in the market for a long wear lipstick. I actually like to put on lipstick so I don’t mind the reapplication process!!

“Living in Active Wear”

Ly workout

Lu workout

So my girls informed me today “Mommy we only want to wear work-out clothes from now on”!  Workout pants in the winter and workout shorts in the summer. LOL.  These girls, I don’t know how they get SO opinionated at such a young age, but they do!  And I am probably to blame for this! I workout most mornings so I start my day in active wear. And I really DO intend to put on “real clothes” afterwards. It doesn’t always happen though I’m afraid.

I thought I would share some of our workout outfits that we found at really good prices!  I am loving these Free People Lace up leggings! They are so comfy and the detail is super fun! I’ll be ordering these in more colors. They are currently 50% off on Shopbop.

My girls are going through a phase where they are REALLY hard on their clothes.  So I was happy to find these workout outfits at Old Navy for super cheap.  Their Go-Dry Performance Crewneck is only $5 and comes in several colors.  And their Printed Cropped leggings are $8-10 depending on the color/print.

Active wear has gotten SO cute and there are tons of options now.  And it really IS on trend.  So we don’t have to feel bad about living in it!  And it’s an excuse to wear your comfy tennis shoes all day!

What are your favorite active wear pieces/brands? I would LOVE to hear from you about the active wear that you live in!

Here’s to an active lifestyle!

“Green with Envy”

green mj

Happy St Patrick’s Day AND Happy Friday!  Green is one of my favorite colors AND I am Irish, so this is always a fun day for me!  My oldest has been battling the flu all week 🙁  So it has been a low-key hang around the house type of day (week)   But, I had to put on the AMAZING green maxi dress from Matilda Jane Clothing. It is so comfortable and flattering. I prefer it belted, but you could totally go either way!  It runs generous. I am wearing the XS. I totally recommend this gorgeous dress as it will be perfect for so many occasions this Spring/Summer. Down in the Valley Dress.  And can we just talk about this sweet, striped dress my little princess is wearing? It is a soft, cotton material and seriously so comfy. I know she will wear it a ton this Spring/ Summer! Backyard Oasis Dress.

I hope you have an amazing weekend and Spring Break if that’s coming up for you this next week!  If so, what are your Spring Break plans? We have a short weekend getaway planned for the fam. That’s about as much as we can do these days with the terrible two’s action we have going on!  Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! I would love to hear from any of you!

Cleaning out and organizing your closet!

This is something we all dread, let’s face it!  Last fall, my closet reached an all time level of being cluttered and “overstuffed”.  It was to the point where I didn’t even want to go in there. When I did, I immediately got stressed out.  And to make matters worse, I had NO IDEA what I even had.  So, I contacted “Closets to the Max”.  I had reached the point where professional help was necessary.  If your budget allows, it’s great to hire professional help.  If not, grab a friend with a good fashion sense to help you out! You need another set of eyes to help you realize that the dress you bought 7 years ago just isn’t cute anymore lol!

This is going to take you a while, so set aside some time! Here are the steps that we went through.

  1. Take EVERYTHING out of your closet a section at a time and lay it on your bed. Look at each piece and ask yourself the following questions: “Do I wear this?”  “Do I even LIKE this?” “Is this current?”
  2. Make 3 piles the keep pile, the get rid of pile, and the maybe pile.  If you haven’t worn it in a year or so, you are probably never going to.  So GET RID OF IT!!!  It is just cluttering up your space. Go through your entire closet with the same system.
  3. In the keep pile, ask yourself do I know HOW to wear this? If not, look online pinterest, Instagram, etc to get some styling ideas.  Snap a screenshot just so you don’t forget
  4. Do the same thing with shoes, jewelry, scarves, hats, etc.  Shoe styles change from season to season, so if you have had them 5 plus years, they probably need to go!
  5.  If you are like me and have multiples of similar things, keep the best few.  For instance if you have like 10 black sleeveless tops (like I did) just keep the best 2 or 3 and donate the rest!
  6. Don’t keep clothing in hopes that you “might lose weight and fit into again one day.” As my favorites Clinton and Stacy used to say “dress for the body you have, not the body you WISH you had.”
  7. Go back through the “Maybe” pile and reevaluate.  Only keep it if you KNOW you will wear it and it has a purpose in your closet.
  8. As you are putting the “yes” pile back into your closet, organize them into sections.  Tops together, pants together, outerwear together, cardigans together, long dresses, short dresses, etc.
  9. If you are cramped for space, take the clothes out of your closet that are not in season and store them. I store my off season clothes in storage bags from Walmart and just put them at the bottom of my closet.

image000000

I also organize my accessories as they can clutter up your closet pretty quickly! I have a couple of fixtures I use for jewelry organization. You can also hang a skinny curtain rod and hang your jewelry on S hooks.

jewelry

Donate the items you aren’t keeping as you can get a pretty good write off. Or have a closet sale and invite your friends to shop. You can also sell it on FB or IG! Here was my “get rid of pile”. I know, I’m embarrassed.

It’s a lot of work, but having a nice, organized closet is SUCH an amazing feeling!   Please let me know if you have any questions or comments? What is the current state of your closet??

Good luck!

The How to’s of Healthy Hair

hair

hair products

Several of my friends are currently trying to grow out their hair. I’ve gotten some questions about my hair care routine and how I keep my hair long and healthy.  So I thought I would share the products I am currently using and how they fit into my routine. I’m by no means a hair expert, but this is what works for me!

I wash my hair every three days. I don’t have oily hair at all so I can skip a couple of days and be just fine.  I do use a dry shampoo on those in between days simply to give my hair more volume. I use Clean Freak Dry Shampoo and it does the trick and smells great! On my shampoo days, I use Healthy sexy hair sulfate free shampoo and Healthy sexy hair sulfate free conditioner.  I love these products. They are super moisturizing and free of chemicals that are often found in hair care products.  I haven’t gone 100% granola yet, but I certainly avoid chemicals whenever I can! I leave the conditioner on my hair for about 5 minutes then rinse. If you want to keep your shampoo at a drugstore price point, I really like the Tresemme Naturals Shampoo and Conditioner with Avocado.  It is also very moisturizing and doesn’t contain as many chemicals  Once a week, I use a hair mask.. This strengthens the hair and deeply moisturizes.  I especially love the Carols Daughter Monoi hair mask.  I experience less breakage now that I am using this.  And a container will last you quite a while.  I wash my hair at night and let it dry naturally so this avoids the heat of a blow dryer.  This isn’t actually by choice, but my two year old can’t be trusted for a SECOND. So no more daytime showers for a while!  I also use a leave in conditioner so my hair is easier to comb out.  I am currently using the It’s a 10 leave in conditioner lite.  This is also a heat protectant!  It is super important to use one before you use your straightener, wand, or curling iron.  After I curl my hair on day 1, I just curl a few pieces on day 2 or 3 to touch up so not all of my hair is getting curled every day.  Shiny and healthy hair go together, so I use a shine spray when I want my hair to have that extra sheen.  Redken Shine Flash 02  does the trick!

Our hair and skin are a reflection of whats going on internally, so I take a Biotin supplement and a multivitamin.  I’m currently taking the Plexus X Factor multi vitamin. (Can be purchased through Amy Blue 913-553-7644).

I hope this helps you in your quest for stronger, healthier (and longer if you so choose) hair! Please comment if you have any thoughts or questions.  I would love to hear from you:)

The Spring Shoe Guide

wedges

I absolutely LOVE when the weather starts changing because it’s an excuse to go shoe shopping!  I am already filling my closet (Probably WAAAAY more than I should be) with my favorite Spring styles.  And I wanted to share some of them with you.  Here are some of the trends for Spring that are definitely worth checking out!

1)espadrilles-I think everyone needs a pair for Spring/Summer.  They come in all heights, colors, and price points.  I prefer the wedge ones and getting a beige/nude color is the ultimate staple for Spring.  They will literally go with EVERYTHING!

2) embellishments-Studs, tassels, Pom poms,  embellished shoes are HUGE for Spring/Summer.  I love this for a beachy look and to give a pop of color!

3)light colored sneakers- I am loving all of the pastel tennis shoes right now!  I especially love all of the blush tones.  I’m sure you’ve noticed that blush is everywhere for Spring.  This is a great way to be comfy and look light and airy for Spring too.

4) Mules/slides-Mules are making a huge comeback for Spring/Summer.  I love being able to just slip on shoes and run out the door. Hey, every second counts when you have 3 littles. I’m especially loving the mule loafers I’m seeing online and in stores.

5) Blocked heels-Lot’s of block and chunky heels this Spring! This is a good thing, since they are way more comfy than the stiletto heel.

6) Ankle ties-Lot’s of wrap around the ankle going on this season! I absolutely LOVE this look with a flowy summer dress, knee length or a little shorter!

Sunless tan tips and review

self-tanner-2

self-tanner-1

I’m pretty much the palest person I know!! In fact, when I was little, the kids at school called me Casper! 🙁  It’s ok though, I’ve since recovered and moved on!

By now,  I pretty much have a PHD in sunless tanning.  In the winter, I don’t mess with it since I’m mostly covered up.  We are starting to have some warmer days now, so it’s time to start up my sunless tanning routine again!   Here are some tips to achieve the best sunless tan possible!

1)Exfoliate and shave your legs prior to applying sunless tanner

2) make sure your skin is totally clean of makeup, lotions, etc

3) I do NOT apply sunless tanner to my face, but if you do, use one specifically for the face and moisturize any dry patches of skin

4) I apply lotion to my knees, elbows, and feet to keep the sunless tanner from clinging to the bony areas.

5) Wash your hands after application, then reapply a very small amount to the tops of your hands and blend around the wrist area.  Then wipe off your palms with a wet washcloth.  I learned this trick after NOT applying it to my hands and they were WAY whiter than my arms.  It was NOT attractive.

6) To help your sunless tan last longer, moisturize daily.

Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer– For the price, this is a great product! It is gradual, so you need to allow several days to get a nice color.  I originally tried the fair, but it was so subtle I changed to the medium. Since it is gradual, you don’t have to be quite as precise in your application which is nice.  I found the smell of this to be a little unpleasant, but it is a good moisturizer!

St Tropez Bronzing Mousse-This product is around $35 which is on the pricier end for self tanners.  It goes on bronze so you get color immediately which is nice, but it intensifies over the next few hours. And since it’s colored you can make sure you aren’t missing any areas and that the color is going on evenly. It dries SUPER fast so make sure you don’t mess around once you apply it! Also, you MUST wear gloves with application it WILL stain your palms.  My poor husband had brown palms after applying this to my back once!  Again, this has somewhat of an unpleasant smell. I usually apply my self tanners at night, then shower the next morning to get rid of the smell. The color of this one is a bit more intense than some of the others I’ve tried. So, this would be a good choice for someone with a darker skin tone.

Kiehl’s Sunless Tanning Lotion-This is extremely moisturizing and around $22.  It has apricot oil, cocoa butter, and Vitamin E which I really like. It feels amazing going on the skin.   The color starts developing in about an hour and then intensifies over the next 3-4 hours. I got a really nice color from this, but I did end up with a streak or two on my legs.  I think I just needed to rub it in better.  Lotions require more “rubbing” and dry time than the foams. Overall, I like this one and the smell seems to be a little more pleasant than most sunless tanners.

Rodan and Fields Sunless Tanning Foam-This is my current holy grail for several reasons! It goes on evenly and the color is  a very natural bronze. This one works great for fair skinned people like myself because the color is subtle.  If you are darker skinned, you can build it over several days.  I also love that it dries super quickly.  I mean, who wants to stand around naked while your sunless tanner dries?  Also, a little goes a long way.  A $26 bottle will last you!  This is my current fave!

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs– This is what I use when I get in a pinch.  I have NOT planned ahead and need some color STAT! This is basically just a makeup, not an actual sunless tanner. So, I just spray my neck, chest area, arms, legs, or whatever is showing and needs color.  I use the fair/medium one.  This stays put pretty well.  I actually have to scrub to get it off in the tub. There are a couple of cons to this one though,  It is MESSY. It gets all over the bathroom. So I usually stand in the shower or go outside to spray.   I may or may NOT have been in my backyard numerous times in my underwear spraying myself lol.  And it can rub off on light colored clothing, but luckily it doesn’t stain!

Loreal Sublime Bronzing Gel– This is around $10 which is a great price.  It goes on pretty smooth  and gives a nice color overall.   The smell bothered me quite a bit though.  The gel is bronze so you get some immediate color that will  intensify over the next few hours!

I hope my 20 plus years of sunless tanning experience will help you get that perfect and SAFE glow. I am glad there are so many options now and we can avoid the damaging UV rays and still get a healthy bronze Glow!  And don’t forget to apply your sunscreen daily!

The Mama’s Guide to Swimwear!

mom-swim-1

Every year swimsuit shopping is such a big ordeal for me.  My criteria pre children was simply “is it cute”?  These days I ask myself a LOT more questions. 1) will it fall down if a child slightly tugs at it? 2) If I bend down to pick up a kid is something going to pop out? And several more questions along these lines.  Ladies: if you are toting kids around the beach/pool strings and triangles do NOT need to be a part of your vocabulary.

I’ve done  the work for you and selected some great suits for comfort, functionality, while still being on trend.  And I have selected some at all price points.  Here are some of my suggestions while shopping for that perfect suit.

  1. Invest in a great one piece.  Several years ago you couldn’t even find a one piece that wasn’t totally Grandma.  Now they are everywhere and totally on trend. You can find them with cut-outs, mesh inserts, and all other sorts of details to give them a little edge.
  2. Don’t be afraid to invest and go for a good quality suit. In the swimsuit department you get what you pay for.  You are better off to have one or two higher quality suits than several cheap ones.  The fabric and fit will be better and it will last longer.  And for goodness sake, DON’T shop for one in the Junior’s Department.
  3. Experiment with detail! Mesh, cutouts, and scallops are huge trends right now! Don’t be afraid to add a little interest to your suit.
  4. If you do a two piece make sure the bottoms have some coverage, because when you bend down to pick up that little one……….and same goes for the top!                                These are a steal at under $50!
