Styling the “Midi” Skirt

The Midi skirt is back!  For several years it was all about the maxi skirt, but now we are starting to see those ankles again! I love the vintage look of the midi and it is super versatile.  I’m not going to lie though, I love maxi dresses because it doesn’t matter if your legs are white and unshaved-ha!  I am loving this Free People Midi skirt because the shape is so flattering.  The fabric is just right and can be worn now and for Spring/Summer. For a winter look I paired it with an inexpensive white, fuzzy sweater.  These slouchy gray booties are such a great closet staple and go with everything.  To make the outfit more “wintery” I threw in my favorite accessory, a wool fedora.  My husband told me that I look so much better without a hat, but I guess I’m not listening.  I still wear them all the time and love them.

I love pieces that are multi-functional and can be worn year round.  That is one of the reasons I was drawn to this piece.  This is how I plan on wearing it for Spring/Summer. I’m not really a fan of shorts, so I tend to wear skirts/ dresses in the warmer months.

IMG_1979

My Spring/summer version will be a comfy, gray tankwedgesa straw fedora, and a bamboo clutch.  I know warm weather seems soooooo far away right now!  I like to think about all the different ways I can wear a piece though!

Thanks so much for reading and I hope you have a great weekend! What is your favorite thing to wear for multiple seasons??  We all have a few special pieces that we really love! I would love to hear from you!!

10 Closet staples to build your wardrobe!

Have you ever heard the saying, “So many clothes, but nothing to wear.”?  That’s what happens when your closet is lacking the basics.  Staple pieces are the “foundation” of your wardrobe then you can build your outfits around them.  Your closet should be roughly 70% basic, classic pieces and 30% trendy, fun pieces.  You can mix the trendy pieces in with your classics to keep it fresh.  I recommend investing more in the staple pieces so they will last and keeping the trendy pieces inexpensive.  (All of these pics are taken from previous posts)

  1. Black leggings- the options are endless here. They can be leisure wear, dressy, and worn with a long sweater.  Faux leather leggings are definitely the “IT” legging right now and the added texture really gives your outfit a boost.  Hands down my favorites are the Spanx faux leather legging.  They are SO comfortable, flattering, and amazing quality.  I just can’t say enough about them.  I wish I had 10 pair of them because I could truly wear them everyday! This faux leather legging is less expensive, but I don’t like them QUITE as much as the spanx.  They are still a great option though.IMG_1562.jpg
  2. Denim jacket-  A good denim jacket is the perfect transition piece!  When it starts to warm up, you can throw it over a dress. And when it starts to cool off (but isn’t quite coat weather yet) you can throw it over a cozy turtleneck.  A distressed, slightly over sized cut is totally on trend and so versatile.  I love the BP trucker jacket and it is so reasonably priced! I highly recommend it!DSC_3853.JPG
  3. Silky camisoles-  I wear these under everything!! I think a black one and a white one is a must. I wear them under blazers, cardigans, and dresses.  These really are an important wardrobe basic.  I love the silky camisoles from Express and they are very reasonably priced! I highly recommend grabbing one or two of these!FullSizeRender (6).jpg 4.  Leather Bomber jacket-  The options are endless here!  I wear this with a tee and jeans  and throw it over a dress.  Suede works for Fall, Winter, and Spring which is a win win situation.  If you are in the market for a real suede jacket my favorite is the BLANKNYC jacket in cognac.  This color literally works with everything.   If you are looking to spend less and prefer a faux leather, I really like this less expensive optionDSC_3159

5. Basic t-shirts- I love a soft, comfy tee to wear with jeans in the warmer months and to layer in fall/winter. I have long sleeved ones and short sleeved.  I layer these under my cardigans and blazers.  It’s hard to find tees that actually hold up. I love the Lush t-shirts from Nordstrom.  They are soft, excellent quality,  only $24, and come in multiple colors! I also love the long sleeve version and it’s on sale for $17!  For that price, get on in every color!!

IMG_1648.jpg

6. Athletic shoes-  I can’t believe how many options there are!  They are in so many styles and colors.  They aren’t just for exercising anymore, you see with them dressier outfits, even dresses.  I really think people just want to be comfortable these days! And I’m all for that!  I have worn my Vans (first picture) so much.  They are so comfortable yet trendy.  These aren’t really for working out, but they are great for walking. I walked a million miles in them at Disney.  My search for the perfect athletic shoe was really extensive.  I wanted it to be lightweight, but still have lot’s support which is hard to find apparently.  The Nike Presto is my dream come true as far as shoes go.  They are seriously like walking on a cloud! These are the perfect athletic shoe.DSC_3995IMG_1455

7. The perfect pair of denim- Finding the right pair of denim is so important!  The current trend is a higher rise skinny jean with or without distressing. I love the higher rise because it is so flattering.  My favorite pair of designer denim is Rag and Bone skinny jean. (first picture) They are amazing and if your budget allows, worth the investment.   If you are looking for great jeans at a lower price point, EXPRESS jeans (bottom picture)are also some of my favorites.

DSC_3451

IMG_5549

8. Cream colored cardigan- I throw a cozy, cream colored cardigan over so much!  The Lidia cardigan has been my go to cardigan this fall/winter.  The options are endless with this. I love that is super soft and it’s currently on sale for $49!

IMG_1652.jpg

9. Oversize sweaters- When it gets really cold, I just want to throw on a big cozy sweater, leather leggings, and boots! This is such a great and easy cold weather look.   I love this tunic sweater. It is so comfortable and basic.

DSC_4405.JPG            DSC_4411

10. Black turtleneck- This has been of one my most worn pieces this winter.  I prefer a really thin, fitted one so it layers nicely.  I love This one and it’s only $25! One of my favorite ways to wear it is under a Wrap scarf. It really is the perfect basic!

IMG_1507.JPG

I hope this list of “foundation pieces” as I like to call them will help you build a functional and easy to manage wardrobe.  The sky is the limit with these and you can mix and match them so many ways!

What is the one piece in your closet that you can’t live without? I would love to hear from you. As always, thanks for reading!!!

Workout Essentials for your New Year’s Fitness goals!

It’s no secret: the number one New Year’s resolution is something along the lines of get healthy, lose weight, eat better, and exercise more.  We all want to look and feel our best!  We are more likely to do these things when we have the right tools and the right active wear.  If you have a super cute pair of new leggings, it might make that trip to the gym a little easier.  So, I want to share my favorite active wear and gym gear to help you in your fitness goals for the new year!

IMG_1455.jpg

I am totally into high waisted leggings right now.  They hold everything in and they stay put while I workout.  These Zella Leggings are a current favorite and I bought them in both colors! I highly recommend them! My favorite workout top is a basic black tank. I tend to wear printed leggings and this great basic looks good with everything!  Finding the right workout shoes is the toughest part for me!  I need a lot of support, but still want them to be lightweight and flexible.  The Nike Presto Sneaker is by far the most comfortable tennis shoe I have ever owned and it’s just been marked down! I can’t say enough great things about this shoe!! It’s been SO cold here lately so this Northface Furry Fleece is my favorite jacket to throw over my workout clothes.

IMG_1439.jpg

IMG_1443 (1)

IMG_1441.jpg

I prefer to do my workouts at the gym. Getting out of the house and being by myself for 30-45 minutes is part of my therapy 🙂  I do like to have a few basic pieces of equipment at home in case I can’t get to the gym though.   A yoga mat is a must at home for stretching and if I get an urge to do a plank.  I know I need a life- ha!  You can do a ton of exercises at home with a pair of hand weights and an exercise ball.

Happy New Year and wishing you the best with all of your goals.  I’ve never liked the saying “New Year, new you”!  It’s a new year, so be your BEST you!  What are your goals for the new year? I would love to hear from you. As always, thanks for reading!

Choosing your outfits for family pictures!

IMG_0302.jpg

IMG_0307.jpg

Pictures by Everafter Portraiture 479-633-5126

Choosing outfits for family pictures is hands down the most stressful part of the process! I know I am not alone in this.  I hear it all the time from my friends.  Here is the thought process I go through as I plan our wardrobes and I usually love how they turn out (assuming the kids cooperate)

  1. Figure out the setting and the general color scheme you want to go with.
  2. What is the vibe I want to give dressy, casual, ? Do I want the picture to convey a specific season or holiday?
  3. I generally dress my husband and I more understated (solids or small prints) and my kiddos with more interest.
  4. Incorporate different textures.   I incorporated as many different textures as I could metallic, fur, embroidery.  These elements really enhance the quality of your pictures!
  5. Mix Patterns, I mixed floral, argyle, and plaid and it all worked!
  6. Layer up! For fall and winter pictures, layering looks best! Add vests, jackets, tights,  and knee socks, etc.
  7.  Choose outfits that match your kid’s personalities.  While I want our pictures to be seamless and tell a story, I want them to reflect who we really are.  For instance, my oldest is a no frills, sporty girl.  So I put her in high top sneakers and basically a t-shirt dress.
  8. Make sure your outfits go with your surroundings. We took our pictures at a Christmas tree farm, so obviously our outfits needed a winter, Christmas feel
  9. Don’t be matchy match. I know back in the day it was cool for everyone to wear jeans and a black shirt.  Make it interesting with colors and patterns! Your photos will be way more fun and have personality!
  10. Try not to be overly stressed! If I get really worked up, then so do my kids and that makes it harder for everyone! Just remember you are making memories! Last year my son was 18 months old and he threw a fit for most of the session.  The girls and I just acted like we were playing with him and it worked!  See pic below

I hope these tips will help make your wardrobe selections a little less stressful!  The goal is to capture beautiful family shots that we can cherish and share with others!  And I hope my ideas will make this easier  Thanks for reading and good luck with any upcoming family photos! The Stocking Stuffer Guide

faux-fur-stockings-c.jpg

Every year I think I’m done Christmas shopping, but THEN I remember that I still have to get stocking stuffers. Then I am dashing around at the very last minute grabbing whatever I can find.  I’m trying to do better this year and have been searching online ahead of time! I have found some amazing goodies and I want to pass along my finds.  Maybe this will help you avoid that last minute panic.

IMG_0236 (1).jpg

You just can’t go wrong with cute beanie for a stocking stuffer!  This is perfect for the men in your life and the kiddos.  I got my husband THIS ONE  and an adorable Pom pom one for my girls!

IMG_5259.jpg

This time of year, just wouldn’t be complete without yummy candles.  They make the perfect gift/stocking stuffer. I especially love this Lavender Thyme  candle and it comes in several other scents as well!  My most used accessory is my leopard clutch so I will be grabbing a couple of these for stocking gifts as well.

DSC_3803

You just can’t go wrong with giving inexpensive jewelry as stocking gifts.  The Starfish Project makes gorgeous, reasonably priced jewelry and a portion of the sales empower women who have been enslaved by human trafficking.  I always love supporting a cause and their jewelry is stunning!

You can shop all of my stocking stuffer picks here in my boutique page below. Happy Shopping and remember don’t wait until the last minute! Thanks for reading!

All that sparkles, Holiday looks for mom and daughter!

DSC_4509.JPG

DSC_4497.JPG

DSC_4515.JPG

DSC_4512.JPG

I’ll take any excuse to wear something sparkly! And this time of year is perfect to sport some shine!  I am also a major denim girl, so I love pairing denim with a fun, festive top.   When I found this Sequin blazer I went nuts!  Unfortunately, this EXACT jacket sold out immediately. I searched high and low to find another one this long, but had no luck. I am linking the closest one I could find.  It is the same cut and will totally convey the same classic, chic look.  I paired a black crop top to play off the proportions of the long jacket.  And I went with a Rag and Bone high waisted jean because mama doesn’t show more than an inch of skin in the midriff department lol!  These jeans are currently 33% off.  They are a splurge, but I can’t say enough about them.  They are the most flattering jeans I own and worth the investment! If you are going for a dressier look, dark wash is the way to go!  A burgundy velvet pump was the perfect color pop.  These are under $50!  My fabulous tassel earrings were made by my talented friend, Jenna.  She started her IG page literally TODAY. So give her a follow @feltandfringe.  They are available in all colors and are only $24.

And now the complicated part.  My girls are now 7 and 9 and the days of tutus, huge bows, ruffles, and dressing like mommy are long gone 🙁 It seriously makes me so sad.  So finding holiday looks for them and avoiding World War 3 isn’t easy.  A Gold pleated dress was our compromise.  It is basically just a soft t-shirt with shiny fabric at the bottom. I’m guessing that is why it made the cut.  The idea of dressy shoes wasn’t met with approval so we paired it with Black converse. I’m not sure how, but converse always seem to look cute with everything!  And my girls are not about to “match” me, but I love that our look tells the same story!

I hope you and your family are enjoying this amazing time of year! It’s such a fun and exciting time, but it can also be very stressful with all of the extra activities. In all honesty, I feel quite overwhelmed during this season.  But at the end of the day, it’s all just details.  This holiday season is about love, family, and celebrating the Birth of the King.  So enjoy, rejoice, and be blessed friends!

The Kid-Approved Gift Guide!

DSC_4453.JPG

The only way to REALLY know what someone wants for Christmas is to ask them.  I sat my little people down at the computer and told them to pick out the best gifts for themselves and their friends.  I seriously can’t believe how many cool toys are out there these days.  I feel like there were Barbie dolls and Cabbage patch kids back in my day and that’s about it.  Seriously, the options are endless and I love that many of the gifts are hands on and crafty. One of my girls picked out a Gummy bear candy lab. I mean, how fun is that? And when I saw the make your own mermaid tail, I might have wondered if it came in adult sizes! For reference, my girls are 7 and 9.  They are as different as night and day, so I feel like I got a good variety!  Oh and btw, are my girls the only ones obsessed with slime?

DSC_4423.JPG

And as far as this little guy is concerned, there is NO time for pictures these days.  He is more interested in his surroundings.  He pretty much pointed at everything and said he wanted it, but these are the things he got the most excited about. He is about to turn 3 so he’s all about trucks, tractors, and things that move!

I hope this gift guide will help you get some Christmas shopping done! Don’t wait until the last minute!  Get it done now, and you can relax later!

Happy Shopping and thanks for following along!

The Perfect outfit for your Holiday Party!

Holiday parties are just around the corner! I LOVE this time of year, but it can be stressful figuring out what to wear to all of the different types of parties.  Cocktail, dressy, casual, no matter the occasion, I have some great suggestions for you.  This is also an expensive time of year, so I am keeping these suggestions around $100 and below.

DSC_4359.JPG

DSC_4347

DSC_4346.JPG

When I saw this stunning dress, I fell in love with it!! I love velvet, metallic, and feminine pieces and this encumbers all of those things!  If I wore it to an actual event, I would wear a lace bandeau under it just to be safe.  It was fine for standing still for pictures though. After nursing three babies and ramping up my workouts, there is less to hold it in place these days. Ha!  It really just screams elegance to me and that’s why I was so drawn to it. It’s an excellent price for an evening dress as well. And what says evening glam more than faux fur?  I love this jacket so much and that it can be worn casual with jeans also.  And this outfit is very comfortable.  How often can you say that about an evening outfit?

There are so many good choices right now so I wanted to share some more of my favorites with you that would be amazing for a cocktail/ dressy holiday party.

I absolutely love this velvet wrap dress for a dressy (non cocktail) party.  The color and embroidery detail totally caught my eye.  Wrap dresses are flattering on everyone too! For this type of party, I also love a fun statement top with a dressy pant like a leather or faux leather legging.  This EXACT dress can be purchased at “Skye on the Town”.  You can follow them on IG as @skyeonthetown.  I am linking similar options below.

Finally for a casual Christmas party, I love denim, a statement top, and bold accessories.  I currently have a cape obsession, so I love that concept for a holiday party.  This black one has endless styling options.  You can totally use your accessories to make your look more festive.

I hope these tips will make your holiday styling a little less stressful!  Experiment with texture to create interest in your looks.  This includes lace, fur, velvet, leather, and suedes.  And this is the perfect time to branch out and try something new!  I love to mix it up and experiment!

I hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving week!! How many holiday parties are on your calendar?
